NW, French leader in battery energy storage systems (BESS), is working through its subsidiary NW Finland to become the strategic platform for battery energy storage in the ordic countries by 2027. This expansion will enable Finnish expertise to be exported to Sweden and the Baltic countries in the first instance.

Recognized as one of Europe’s leading energy groups, NW aims to deploy 1GW/3GWh in the Nordic and Baltic countries. This pan-European expansion is supported by its subsidiary NW Finland and enables the export of Finnish expertise. In Finland, more than 200 storage units, known as JBox®, are already in service to support the country’s ambitious energy transition.

JBox® units play an essential role in local and national electricity grids. They provide a balancing solution in Finland where more than 55% of the energy mix is supplied by renewable energies. They enable the integration of wind and solar energy into the electricity system and mitigate price fluctuations in the electricity markets. Deployed in remote locations, they also help to ensure a reliable electricity supply for municipalities and businesses.

In order to expand into Sweden and the Baltic countries, NW will draw on the expertise it has acquired in Finland and France. This expertise is part of a local approach and long-term vision, with supervision of all projects from development and commissioning through to operation. This expertise guarantees the quality, sustainability, and successful integration of each project into the electrical system.

NW raises €220 million Holdco debt financing from EIG to accelerate group expansion

NW, one of Europe’s leading energy pure players operating battery energy storage systems (BESS), has secured a landmark €220 million HoldCo debt financing from EIG, a leading institutional investor in the global energy and infrastructure sectors. The financing will support the development and construction of NW’s small-scale, distributed BESS assets – known as JBox® – across France, Finland, Italy and Sweden, enabling NW to reach 4.6 GWh of operating capacity by the end of 2027. The facility underpins the company’s continued pan-European expansion as demand for flexible and decentralized storage solutions intensifies.

NW is already the largest BESS operator and developer in France, with approximately 1.0 GWh of operating assets, and in Finland with approximately 0.6 GWh by the end of 2025. The company operates under a highly contracted and flexible business model, leveraging modular technology to enable streamlined development, permitting, and construction timelines. NW is fully integrated across the BESS value chain, from development and construction through to operation and commercial optimization.

The facility, provided by EIG, demonstrates the growing availability of innovative financing solutions for differentiated BESS business models and reflects strong lender confidence in NW’s robustness and execution capabilities. This facility is among the first of its kind in this space, providing non-dilutive capital at scale at the platform level to accelerate the growth of NW’s portfolio and triple its operational capacity by the end of 2027.

With this financing, NW will have raised over €1 billion since its inception in 2018, keeping its founder, Jean-Christophe Kerdelhué, as its majority shareholder with over 70% of the capital.

… by offering French solutions. A large number of JBox® distributed energy storage units will be installed throughout France. Developed by NW since 2018, the JBox® is a solution based on lithium-ion battery technology. It takes the form of a plug-and-play container assembled at Nidec’s Saint-Etienne plant. These energy storage units provide frequency ancillary services to the power grid. The first deployments are planned for June so that these units can participate in the automatic frequency restoration reserve market, which will open at that time.
